Best Christmas gift ideas

  1. Books – Waterstones offers a 10% student discount, so why not head over there and get the latest Enid Blyton Brexit parody, The Very Hungover Caterpillar or even the best-selling What If? – a real favourite here at Save the Student! Failing that, you can't go far wrong by picking one of Amazon's list of 'most wished for' books.
  2. Games – FIFA 18 (PS4Xbox One and Nintendo Switch) and Call of Duty: WWII (PS4 and Xbox One) will be at the top of countless Christmas lists this year, but more family-friendly titles like the remastered Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are guaranteed to go down a treat. If you're still struggling for ideas, check out Amazon's 'most wished for' games!
  3. DVDs and Blu-rays – A real Christmas staple this one! Some of the year's biggest films have come out on DVD and Blu-ray in time for the festive period, including Dunkirk, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Beauty and the Beast. Still stuck for ideas? Amazon's 'most wished for' DVDs is your friend again!
  4. TV boxsets – Some of these are bit pricier than other Christmas gift options on this list, but if you've got the cash, Game of Thrones season 1–7, The Office (US) and Blue Planet 2 are all must-watch. Amazon's 'most wished for' TV list is full of more great ideas.
  5. Women's perfume – Vera Wang Lovestruck, ARI by Ariana Grande and Marc Jacobs Decadence Eau So Decadent are very reasonably priced, with some great reviews to boot. Superdrug offers a 10% discount for students, so it's worth checking out their selection as well.
  6. Men's aftershave – Men can smell nice too! We've found Calvin Klein CK One Red Edition, BOSS In Motion and Paco Rabanne Ultraviolet Man at some great prices, and they're all rated as some of the best fragrances out there! If you're after something else, remember you can get 10% off everything at Superdrug, including their selection of aftershaves.
  7. Experience days – This Christmas, why not give someone a gift they'll never forget? Whether it's the chance to drive a supercar, a relaxing spa day or a Michelin star food tasting session, there's something for everyone. Check out Virgin Experience Days for a whole host of other ideas.
  8. Pampering gifts – Can't afford to take them to the spa? Take the spa to them! A foot massager, this set of Yankee candles and one of these snug dressing gowns is the next best thing to a rural retreat, right?
  9. Kitchen gadgets – Whether you go for the Aeropress coffee maker, a VonShef defrost tray or this lovable little Egg Soldier egg cup, kitchen gadgets are among the very best Christmas gift ideas for culinary experts and rookies alike. Have a read of our top 22 kitchen gadgets for some more inspiration!
  10. Household gadgets – Life's easier with gadgets, so why not give someone a Christmas gift in the form of a humane spider catcher or the slightly more tech-y Amazon Echo Dot?
  11. Premium hot drinks – Nobody does these as well as Whittard, so depending on the taste of whoever you're buying a Christmas present for, their Teas of the World, Fantasy Flavoured Coffee Selection and Cocoa Creations Hot Chocolate gift sets can't fail! Scroll through the rest of Whittard's site for a whole load more delicious treats.
  12. Beer sets – Day drinking is never frowned upon at Christmas, so why not pick up one of these beer gift sets – most of which are comfortably under a tenner!
  13. Wine sets – M&S is pretty much a guaranteed stamp of quality, so their white wine and Swiss chocolates gift set is bound to be a corker (pardon the pun). But if chocolates are out of the equation (and we can't really think of a reason why they would be), the rest of M&S' wine gifts are equally as appetising.
  14. Spirits sets – Continuing the boozy gifts (this is the last one, promise), Tesco's selection of spirits gift sets is very impressive. Whether you're buying a Christmas present for a Jack Daniel's fan, a craft gin drinker or a Grey Goose guy/gal, Tesco's spirits gifts cater to all tastes.
  15. Streaming subscription – Even if the person you're buying a gift for already has a streaming subscription, you can still get them a gift voucher to act as credit! NOW TV vouchers and Netflix gift cards are both available, and if you head on over to Zeek, you might even be able to find some for less than their value! And remember, when you sign up for Zeek through us, you get £3 free credit.
  16. Magazine subscription – The beauty of magazines is that there's literally one for every hobby or interest imaginable, but we won't stray into the more niche end of the market here. Subscriptions to Cosmopolitan, Stuff and FourFourTwo are all reasonably priced and come with a discount compared to buying each copy individually. However, if none of these are quite what you're after, iSUBSCRiBE have more offers than you can shake a stick at.
  17. Thoughtful decorations – World scratch map, framed photos (with free photo printing) or film posters – they're all well within a student's budget, and all super thoughtful Christmas gift ideas (if you put some thought into them, of course).
  18. Card and board games – Cards Against Humanity is a student favourite, but the older generations enjoy it too! Scrawl is also a great shout if you're buying for someone your age, but if you're after something a little more PG, or at least 12A, Pass the Pigs shouldn't cause any offence.
  19. Unusual and fun gifts – Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without some bizarre and completely unnecessary crap. If you're really stuck for gift ideas, why not plop for this personalised sprouts growing kit, or this smartphone projector? Failing all of those, always has a few hidden gems!

Christmas cards

xmas cardsIndividual Christmas cards are notoriously expensive, at least for what they are.

For you traditionalists, buy your Christmas cards in packs from charity shops or Card Factory which sells cut-price greetings cards (you can sometimes get big ones for just 99p).

But for even more choice and to avoid the stresses of the high street, try creating and sending your own Christmas cards online with Hallmark, Moonpig or Funky Pigeon.

Some Quick FAQs

Why have we made this list?

Simple really. Here at STS HQ we’ve always struggled for gift ideas and have never come across somewhere that lists so many (student specific) ideas in one place.

We wanted to have a list with great value gifts that literally took the effort out of Christmas shopping and hopefully we’ve done that.

Perfect if you’re a lazy, last minute shopper.

What makes this list different?

It’s super comprehensive for a start! Plus, we’ve tried to put together a list of gifts that could be bought for and by students, and as far as we know, nobody else has done this (or not as well, at least ).

The best thing about this list is that we’ve used a huge number of sites and found their best gifts rather than just mentioning one or two.

How long did it take us to do this list?

Don’t ask.

If you include the time taken to get the experience to put it together, we’re talking years. Even if you don’t include the experience, it still took us a fair while.

What makes these particular items worth listing?

We got together as a team as well as asked friends, family & strangers on the street (maybe not) to come up with the most wanted gifts this year.

We tried our best to cover nearly every type of person that you know.

What if you don't like any of this stuff?

Good for you! We support your, or your recipient’s, unique taste.

It was hard for us to write a list that would suit everyone so we just went for what the majority of people want this Christmas. That’s not to say that we don’t still want to help you. Send us a message and we’ll scout out some cheap prices for ya…

Why are so many of the links to Amazon?

To put it simply, Amazon is amazing for stuff like this. They generally tend to have the cheapest prices on most items. This is because they use clever software to scour the net for similar products and then do everything that they can to offer it for cheaper on their site.

Plus, their free delivery on most items over £20 is a huge bonus…

Want free delivery on the items under £20? Just get a 6 month free trial of Amazon Prime here.

You found an item cheaper elsewhere, why haven't we listed that price?

We’re proud of you! With deal hunting skills like that you can go far…

The fact is that we may have missed this deal when researching this article or it may be a recent change in prices that mean that our pick is no longer the cheapest.

If you do find any of these items (or similar) at a cheaper price then give us a shout and we’ll add it ASAP. After all we don’t want others overpaying…

Can we find the cheapest price for any item that you want?

Yes! We’re pretty seasoned deal hunters here at STS and we’d be happy to help you find the best deals because we hate it when students get ripped off.

Just get in touch via our Facebook page or pop us an email and we’ll find the best price for any item…

You LOVE us for creating this, how can you thank us?

Well, that’s nice of you to say so 😛 Obviously we’re just content with helping you out (it’s what we do) but we’d love it if you could give us a like on our Facebook page or give this page a share.
